hi all,

This is great--this thread is so timely for a project that I just started working on.  I'm wondering--I'm currently monitoring a large room that I'm considering putting collections into, but it is currently empty.  It is within the same facility (but closed off from) another space that is very infested with several types of insects.  Should I avoid using pheromones traps at all to avoid bringing insects from other parts of the building into this space?  And should I still keep pheromone traps 20 feet from any door that opens to the outside?  Again, there are currently no collection items in this space.

Thanks for your help,

Monika,
No, it should not.  Information from Pat Kelley of Insects Limited who is very active in the IPM group was that

"Pheromone traps can be used if kept at least 20 feet from any door that opens to the outside. It is true that you can attract beetles into the building, but you must remember that you are only attracting the male of the species as you are using a female sex attractant. Thus you are not attracting any reproductive pair or female with eggs."

There are other options for monitoring as well such larval monitors depending on the species and the location.

I’d be interested in information and references concerning the comment below – does the presence of pheromone traps lead to a potential increase in insect populations, in a storage area that is fairly well separated from the outside world?

Thanks!

Pheromone traps should never be used unless you intentionally want to increase your insect population.

Baited traps have the ability to pull from the outside. Should you touch the traps pheromone is not good for you.
