As Ercole Gialdi is always quick to mention, treatment by anoxia would be very
effective against carpet beetles. Anoxic treatment can be done using active
means (as Ercole offers - an excellent method for larger applications) or
easily and inexpensively done using a simple passive solution, as follows:
1. create or purchase a barrier film bag to hold the object from barrier film
(eg Marvelseal, Escal, or other oxygen barrier film, NOT a regular plastic bag)
2. insert an appropriate amount of oxygen scavenging sachets in the bag next to
the object (Ageless or some other brand of oxygen absorber)
2. Seal the bag with a heat sealer and wait.
according to information from Tokyo National research lab found at
http://www.keepsafe.ca/KillTimes.htm
you should wait about 2 weeks before opening (if the bag is stored in a warm
room). Note that a cool room will increase the time needed for a thorough kill.

The item in the bag will self buffer, so there should be no threat of damage
from humidity changes.

Conservation by Design and Christoph Waller both offer these materials in
Europe. I limit my sales of oxygen absorbers to Canada, the US, and Australia.

I have worked with conservators for over 10 yrs supplying materials for anoxic
treatments. It is almost always successful and I get very few "what do I do
now?" calls.

hope this helps.

Tom,

The chariot is comprised of a number of different materials, woolen
fabric amongst them, which has been attacked by anthrenus.

Best,

Monika

Why would you want to freeze the lacquer ware? What's the pest?

< div class=MsoNormal>Does anyone have experience with or an opinion on
freezing Japanese lacquer ware? The object in question is a Japanese
festival chariot from the 1980's, comprised of a number of different
materials, some of which are black lacquered wood. The composition of
the lacquer has not been determined (we don't know if it is Urushi or
not), but at this point of time it is in very good condition.

Thanks!
