It is worth noting that pest companies make their money through treatments and
only deal with the 'symptoms' rather than the cause.
It would be far more effective to find the source or sources of the infestation
such as checking chimneys, voids and ducts for possible 'hot spots' like rodent
and birds nests that may be the cause of re-infestation. If the source is not
sought then there is a strong possibility of the problem occurring again even
after the treatment has finished. Open air ducts and windows are also a source
of entry for insect pest, and although air circulation is essential to avoid
mould, maybe a fine mesh over any open gaps would provide sufficient protection
against entry.
Many fabrics are mixed fibres so it would be worth cleaning/treating the whole
of the collection to ensure that all eggs and moths are removed, as it is not a
museum collection this allows for a little flexibility in the treatment rather
than adhering to strict museum guidelines for conservation purposes.
The use of pheromones lures in sticky traps should also prove effective and
possibly cheaper than an intensive repetitive treatment from a pest company.
The most effective methods of pest control are prevention and good
housekeeping. Regular checks of the costume and cleaning of the storage space
will minimise the conditions that these pests thrive in.
I hope this information helps or maybe sparks further thoughts towards a
solution.
Best of luck

Suggestion:
Check the MSDS in detail.
It sounds as if the collection is worn or has the possibility of being
worn.
If treated with such a residual pesticide, make certain it is safe for
human contact for hours under very warm & moist (sweaty) conditions. If
it is, I would be very much interested in knowing what the chemical is.

Hello Everyone,

I apologize for this long-winded email. A local university has asked me

for some help involving a pest infestation in a costume collection and I

thought I would ask you. This is not a museum collection but a
"working" collection that is used in the theater program, etc; however,
it is comprised of period clothing from the 20th century. There are
about 1900 hanging textiles and another 2000 in boxes, and they are kept

in a 12' X 60' room.

When the collection first came to them, it showed evidence of
moth/carpet beetle damage. At the suggestion of an entomologist, the
most vulnerable items in the collection were frozen, the wool and silk
items were vacuumed with a mesh screen, and the room that houses the
collection was periodically fogged with a fabric safe pesticide.

However, the infestation has returned. An exterminating company has
recommended treating the room with a long lasting micro-encapsulated
chemical using controlled release technology to be done on a regular
basis for a year in 3 month intervals.

Are there any other options or suggestions to be considered before this
chemical treatment of the room? Bear in mind, this is not a museum
collection, and the logistics and cost of freezing the almost 4000 items

prohibits freezing the entire collection.

THANKS!
