Good afternoon, I will base my comment on the wide experience my company has on anoxic systems since the 90's, namely to control active insect infestations in Archives, Libraries and Museums, to treat collections that are being transfered to new facilities and to build, install and provide technical assistance to ANOXIA CHAMBERS. When it comes to disinfestations services we do ANOXIA BUBBLES made of plastic film. We use inert gas: most of the times N2 (Nitrogen) bottles for both bubbles and chamber, and N2 generator, only for chambers. Regarding effectiveness of these modified atmospheres, once we control O2, temperature and relative humidity levels, anoxia treatment will be complete in 3 weeks for any kind of materials.
Comparing anoxia chambers and fumigation chambers: When effectiveness is at stake they should be side-by-side; if duration of the treatment is the issue, fumigation goes faster; regarding risk of usage, anoxia has far too low risk; as far as conservation and preservation are concerned anoxia does not have chemical nor phisycal interference in the materials and leaves no residue after treatment. We have done some technicall interventions in fumigation chambers, upgrading it to anoxia technology. Modern technology allows us to produce anoxia chambers that are designed to fit conservation areas and can be operated by regular staff from this department without any special skills or training.
