Hi,

This is a question I've been trying to find out myself. I work in the Network
Rail archives and have recently started a monitoring program, however I was
really interested in what would constitute an infestation.

We did consider looking at the types and amounts of insects trapped per square
foot, but it didn't really help.

As we have so many records in a bad condition after being brought up from the
stores underneath waterloo station, it would be very difficult to say if the
damage was caused by people, environment or insects, so I'm a loss at what to
do next.

Although I studied as a conservator, it was over 10 years ago! Most of what I
learned is either out of date or forgotten so I'd love to have ideas from
people?

Many thanks,

Great question. I wondered if an infestation is when
objects show damage or are at risk. For example, I worked
with a museum that had an annual migration through it, but
it wasn't something that fed on the collection. Was this
an infestation? It was a lot of bodies, but the only
danger was that they would attract feeders that might also
munch on the collection.
