Many museums have adopted a policy of freezing all such natural props
before bringing them into the building. If they are not too big,
they can be sealed into a plastic bag (so the bugs don't get out!)
and put into a normal freezer for a couple of weeks. ( A colder
freezer will do it quicker.)
So there's no reason to stop using them in the future.
There are so many things that conservators tell museums NOT to do
that it's important to figure out safe ways to let them do what they
want.
