Just a note. This reddish colored mite happens to be a clover mite, but not
all red ones that you may find are clover mites. There are a few mites that
will commonly be encountered entering buildings and can be found on sidewalks
and even on the black tar roof of buildings. Some are pollen feeders.

Thanks for the info and suggestions. I’ll look into it more and keep and eye
out for any more activity—we do our pest management (i.e. changing traps,
placing new ones, gathering data, etc) every two months at the museum so even
if they have been there for a while they would have only been there since
mid-November at the longest. I’ll let collections staff know about staining .

Thanks again!

Clover mites thrive in cool (but not freezing) temperatures. If it has been
unusually warm (50’s-70’s) recently, you may well have a bit of Clover mite
activity cropping up. I am not aware of any direct threat that Clover mites
pose to collection items, but they do leave a nasty red stain if smashed. It’s
good to be aware of this fact if you have textiles or rare books in storage
areas and not everyone on staff knows that Clover mites will stain.

Good advice from Tom about the barrier. Clover mites cannot live for any
extended period of time indoors, so there must be an outside source. You might
try waiting until the early afternoon when the sun is warmest and take a walk
on the exterior perimeter area nearest to the site of indoor activity….they
tend to light on warm, sunlit walls and sidewalks in very large numbers.

A vacuum will remove pockets of live specimens not captured by traps. If
activity gets completely out of control(which it shouldn’t this time of year),
an exterior perimeter treatment of the affected area may be in order.

It’s been unusually warm here in the Salt Lake area but not significantly so.
And most of them were found in our basement traps within collections storage,
so if they are clover mites, could they be feeding on any ethnographic items?
Or do these not pose a threat to collections?

Clover mites this early in the year? I know it’s possible, but most of Utah is
frigid in January. Has your area had a localized warm-up recently?

Group -

I agree with Lou; it's a clover mite. They are very common by the millions in
new and heavily-fertilized lawns. They feed on a variety of vegetation and
grasses. If the lawn touches the foundation, they commonly crawl up the walls
and enter through AC units and window drip holes at the base of the window
frame. Putting a 2 or 3 foot band of dark-colored, crushed stones as a border
around the perimeter foundation goes a long way towards preventing them from
crawling up the walls. The sun heats up the stones and turns the border into
an effective barrier.

Maybe a clover mite (Bryobia spp.).

Hi there-

Can anyone ID this bug for me? They are covering severaltraps located in a
basement stairwell and appear bright orange.

Thank you!
