Group - If indeed this is the Death Watch beetle, Xestobium rufovillosum DeGeer, active infestations are extremely rare in the United States. The larvae attack hardwoods, which have been damaged by fungal decay. In my 36+ year career inspecting historic buildings, I've encountered but one active infestation in an old barn in Connecticut. The upper beams of this old post and beam structure had water leakage leading to decay and a subsequent Death Watch beetle infestation. Even if you've found such an insect indoors, the possibility of reinfestation is remote. I'm not familiar with their habits or how to separate them. The elytra do look like those of the death watch beetle. I should have mentioned that the specimen was collected in Philadelphia. Has the death watch beetle been found in the United States?
