Derya - Both the incoming and recirculated air of a forced air HVAC systems goes through a bank of filters. The filters will not trap mold spores (unless they are HEPA filters), but they will trap any insects. The filters prevent insects from getting into the forced air supply from outdoors. However, if the drip pan beneath the AC coils has standing water in it during the warmer months of the year, various types of tiny flies may be generated and blown into the museum. They are not a threat to collections. Minute brown scavenger beetles may also take advantage of this situation and be blown or crawl into the museum, following the ductwork. The idea has come up - when our pest control vendor mentioned that insects can travel through HVAC systems and get from one part of the museum to another. Does checking the filters give us a random sample of what might be around the museum? Or is it overkill to look at these? Have any of you actually done this?
