I am looking into the possibility of a low temperature treatment (freezing) of the collection in the NYC area. Freezing the collection will definitely be time consuming and expensive, although I believe it is possible. That said, it is a "working" collection, meaning the vintage is used as reference material and in heavy circulation (like a library book); e.g. constantly being handled by people all day without gloves. Because so many people rely on it on a daily basis, I am getting pressure from above to fumigate the entire thing. The fumigant the exterminator would like to use is Vikane, and then they would like to clean the entire collection room with Talstar P. My questions to you all are:
* Will Vikane cause damage or change the appearance of the collection? (I know that it likely will, especially because of the wool, but wanted to double check) * Is it safe to fumigate the clothing with Vikane and then return the items to immediate handling by people? * Is it safe for me to be handling a collection on a daily basis (50 hrs/week) that has been fumigated with Vikane? * Is Talstar P a good choice for cleaning the shelving, walls, nooks and crannies with? * Is it safe for me to be confined in a room with poor ventilation that has just been treated with Talstar P? I have read the MSDS sheets for the chemicals and the JAIC article about Vikane from 1990, but still feel uneasy about the toxicity of the fumigants/pesticides that they would like to use. I want to be armed with as much information as possible to make this decision. I know this is a lot to ask all at once, and thank you all in advance for any advice you can offer.
