I'm fairly certain it is a very old American cockroach egg capsule (ootheca),
which may have been partially eaten by a mouse or something else a long time
ago. You are looking at the two rows of dried up eggs in the capsule.
American cockroaches are infamous for gluing egg capsules to objects.

Subject: [pestlist] Need Help With Identification

I am conserving an African mask with this embedded on the surface. Could anyone
help me identify what sort of insect this may be?
Thank you
