1.What does the user get for their $50/£50?
The user gets 12 months support and updates.
Is it just support, or is it disks etc? (Ie is it web download or real box?)
What does this mean in practise? Should people basically buy into $50/yr
for support?
After all, if I buy an MS OS then I'll get support and updates after one
year. (I'm just playing devil's advocate; if I don't ask my customers will!)
How does "licensing" work? Eg what happens if one CD set is used to
install two PCs - will the second not work, or just not get support?
(I've never bought a licence for "free" software before; where I've paid
anything its been for subscriptions or donations.)
As far as I'm aware, your payment is pretty much a subscription. You
basically pay for any licenses on propriety software that come in the
bundle (CITRIX, Groupwise, and other similar apps of which the whole
Novell application suite appears to be included); support via
web/e-mail/phone; updates to packages and access to new packages.
I believe there is an additional charge for box sets (about £30ish),
where as downloads of ISOs are complimentary.
If you have installed the media on two separate machines, but have only
purchased one license you will only receive the benefits on the machine
that is registered with Novell - this is very similar to Red Hat
Enterprise.
I believe with regards to Microsoft you have to pay for support unless
you buy a big buck contract, which even then doesn't provide support for
all MS apps - Novell will support ALL applications that come with SLED 10.
