Hi, I'm Clive, and I run the Leicester Linux User Group. In the early days of PLUG we used to meet at the Northants LUG meetings. Seems like years ago now, probably because it was ;)
I dropped off the plug lists in 2002, so am not sure what you are all up to these days. However, LELUG is getting involved in something that is on your doorstep. Although not Linux specific, openstreetmap.org have been giving presentations at events such as UKUUG Developers conference and LUGRadio. As a result of that, there are a handful of us in LELUG now mapping. The Linux tools are very good, and although it helps if you have a GPS (mine cost me £30), you don't need one. You can either just help add/edit map data, or get involved in developing for the project itself - they have lots of users, but not many code. This week the first 'OSM Midlands User Group' meeting took place. It was agreed that we would have mapping parties, where we converge on a specific area and map it. The first location for that is going to be Rutland. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/WikiProject_Rutland_England Dates and other details have yet to be decided, but it might be sensible if someone from PLUG joins the Midlands List. It might also be possible for someone from openstreetmap.org to give a presentation to PLUG to coincide with the event, demonstrating the tools used. Thoughts? Cheers, Clive.
