I suspect that you are not running a framebuffer console. Please see if there's 
any reference of that in the Ubuntu docs. Failing that, you 
could supply a vga=X option to the kernel to select a different VGA
mode. However, a framebuffer console looks a lot better and you'll even
be able to change the font itself if you want to.
