Well guys i downloaded Ubuntu 7.04 Beta Desktop LiveCd for i386, and playing with it is a live CD first impressions are not bad at all have a couple of issues and comments i'd like to share / discuss and see if anyone has any good tips for me on resolving the issues
1. Built in 3d / Graphical Effects GFX card - Club3D RADEON ATI x800 256Meg AGP - out of the box, enabling the "experimental" settings in Desktop > Prereferences > Desktop Effects, the wobbly windows works fine, but "desktops on a cube" does not seem to work. is this suppose to work out of the box, or do i need Beryl / Compiz installation first? Do i need a different GFX card? - 3d Screensavers blew my mind, espeically A Tunnel, Chess, and SkyRocket was just fantastic, wow, very clever stuff. 2. Sound - Works right out of the box - using On-board sound 3. System Performance takes a hit if the graphical affects are "enabled" not sure if this is a bug or the fact I am running a liveCD not a proper installation from hard disk. so this may be nothing at all 4. Wireless Lan Does not detect my Belkin 54g Wireless PCI Card, even though it shows up in hardware manager as a belkin Network card it does not show up in Network Tools as a configurable device TBH I would be happy to buy a *buntu compatible WIFI card rather than faff about trying to get the Belkins working, but if anyone is willing to help I will try, after all it will save me a a few quid if i can get it working.... 5. And of course lastly all the other issues that come with not having a network / internet connection, eg codecs, and players for my DivX, Mp3, M4a, MOV, MPG and AVI files... After these issues are resolved, next task is to look for a Video Edditing software to pull off / edit, footage from my camcorder, get the printer working, and then I might consider installing it.
