Explains a lot, I can get wobbly windows working right out of the box, but "Desktops on a Cube" does not seems to work, so yes installing Beryl first sounds like is what I am missing. I am not at work tomorrow (and monday) as we get bank holdays off, (WOOT!! )so I am going to install Ubuntu on the desktop PC while I have some time to play. Since I have no WLAN I will have to trail a long ethernet cable downstairs to the router to get most of the stuff downloaded and set up / etc. Also, on the network side of things, I also found (through various forums online) that Belkin cards are notoriously difficult to get working in Linux, BUT the good news is that netgear (PCMCIA and PCI) cards use the Atheros Chipset (WG311T ) and just work right out of the box, all you need to do is select which LAN (SSID) and the appropriate security and enter the passphrase or hash code - at least it was that simple when I used the liveCD on my laptop that has the PCMCIA version Netgear card (WG511T) - so I am going to invest in one of those PCI cards on Payday.
