While we are on the subject of breaking things, once you have found the sweet spot with Beryl, just leave the settings alone.
That's my tip. I have yet to really pressure test Beryl but I suspect either of two things has happened last night (which I fixed now): either; A) playing about with Beryl for extended periods causes memory / cpu leaks, and just grounds to a halt after a while, or (and more likely the case) B) if you fanny around with the settings like I did last night, beryl throws a real tantrum and decides to not draw windows correctly or not accept mouse clicks when you need them most. I am still not 100 percent sure what caused the problems I had last night, but they all seemed to start after i was showing Ed some settings. My solution was to change window manager back to Metacity, right click on the Beryl (red diamond thingy) then open beryl settings manager, turn off all the fancy effects. then quit out of beryl-manager, reboot the computer, and turn them back on again one by one. I also think part of the problem is to do with the settings in System > Pereferences > Desktop Effects, as me and Ed discovered, they seem to unclear as to whether they are active or not, but one of the settings really screws Beryl up royally. I *think* I turned them OFF to fix it, but not 100 percent sure. They could have been off already. The button is confusing. So the moral of the story is - if you turn to the person next to you and say "Oh yes, and whatever you do, dont do this - if you click this, it crashes" (and then actually click it), it probably will ...actually ....um....crash...ahem. :-) -- ***** Richard Forth "I used to be indecisive, but now, I''m not so sure!" *****
