Internet Explorer uses an *ActiveXObject*, while other browsers uses the
built-in JavaScript object called *XMLHttpRequest*.

Ahh I see.....(reading the tutorial)...but does XMLHTTPREQUEST also work in
IE?

Sorry everyone and thanks for your patience, I know this is more coding than
Linux-talk but it sort of related in a way because I need to get this code
working browser-independant, ie so I can  use unbuntu / firefox  for the
code development rather than windows and IE (or IE over wine).
