Following on from the last meeting I want to reinstall.
But I want to try to preserve my /home if possible
And I want to use a spare partition for my home to make re -installation
easier in the future
My partitions are: (As read from GParted)
/dev/sda1 linux-swap 1.05Gb
/dev/sda3 ext3 mountpoint / 36.35Gb
/dev/sda2 ext3 38.93Gb
I want to use /dev/sda2 for /home - I assume I can?
I have followed some instructions in LXF94 - July 2007:
I did this as sudodeleted all that I had done and
sudo mkdir /mnt/tmp
sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/tmp
All went well.
I then tried to drag/drop a file form desktop into the new tmp folder,
and I got permission denied!
I deleted all that I had done and tried carrying out the above commands
as me as user, and I could not even mkdir!!
My reason for all this is that I want to copy my /home to this new
partition, and when I reinstall, tell Ubuntu to use that as home!
HOWEVER, the only bit of home that I REALLY need is my thunderbird and
Firefox settings, so can I simply drag those settings into my new home
from a backup?
Any help gratefully received!
PS Mark - thanks for ideas on PP11. Once I have re-installed I will
have a go.
Ed
