Yes it is true VM Ware Server is completely free all you have to do is register for a free Serial Code that you need during installation, you can then build and run your own images to your hearts content.
This applies for both Windows XP and Linux (in fact in Ubuntu you can get VMWare Server downloaded and installed through the Virtualisation Tab in Automatix, all you need is a registration code as previously mentioned its comletely free to register for one). Only downside is you get the odd email from VMware asking you if you want to attend one of their conferences or something. I think the benefits (free software that's really cool) justifies and out weighs getting the odd spam message every so often. Regarding XP Home comaptibility dont know is the answer, I'd go with Phil and say "Try It", after all its free so what the heck.
