Hello Dave,

Welcome to the group.

I'm a Linux Newbie as well but I find this site very helpful

http://howtoforge.com/the_perfect_desktop_ubuntu_gutsy_gibbon

Furthermore in addition to the Synaptic Packet Manager I also use Automatix2 to
manage installations. You can install it with the command

                        :~$ sudo apt-get install automatix2

[Peterboro] Upgrading to 7.10>> Hi all. I'm another newcomer to the group and a
relative newcomer to Linux. I've been using Feisty for around six months and
have just upgraded to Gutsy within the last couple of days.> First impressions
are good. It solved a long running problem with my Canon iP4300 printer, which
needed TurboPrint to get it running under Feisty. This now works with Gutsy,
'out of the box'. My Epson Perfection 1670 scanner is still out of action. This
never worked with Feisty because of the USB suspend bug that caused so many
forum postings. I have a feeling that the bug is sorted in Gutsy, but the
scanner firmware seems to be screwed. If anyone knows how to re-install
firmware using Ubuntu, I'd be glad of some advice. The Epson install disk is
(inevitably) aimed at Windows users and does not work with Linux. The only
other problem I've had with Gutsy is that Google Earth doesn't seem to work any
more. I tried a complete re-install (via Synaptic), but it either refuses to
run at all, or only gets as far as the splash screen before hanging up. Apart
from that, I'm pleased with the upgrade.> I don't know how others handle
upgrades and re-installations, but I've found the simplest way for me is to
back up the Home folder to an external drive (regularly!), then do a complete
fresh install. Once this is done, I add back any other apps that I use and then
copy across the necessary folders from my Home folder backup, e.g. Mozilla.
Thunderbird, Tomboy, etc. I know that it would probably be better to put the
Home folder into a separate partition, but I haven't quite grasped how to do
that yet.> Regards,> Dave
