Thanks for all the responses, out of pure interest the reason I chose not to
grub and instead swap the ide cables is to wean myself off windows using the
"Hassle Factor"
 - ie if i have to use windows I have to open the case and swap the cables
over so i am more likely to try harder to get whatever I need out of Linux.

Failing that I have a working insllation of Windows XP that I can boot into
if needs really must, I have to swap over the ide cables to get to it.
