So my strategy would be "get a price and budget for RHEL, we'll get started with CentOS and if/when we need to migrate we will do".
There are many good projects based on CentOS, and as others have said it does seem to be much better supported than you might think. Even if I wanted formal support with CentOS/RHEL, I'm not sure based on what I've heard recently that RH would be my first choice for delivering that support anyway!
Disclaimer: I've not used RHEL or CentOS in anger myself. We do use SME (www.smeserver.org) which is based on CentOS 4.5, however.
