But to my inexperienced eyes, cannot see any Netgear card detected.
agreed, it can appear as eth1, wlan0, ath0 or other such things, but
didn't. Next try :-
lspci
lsusb
lspcmcia
to see if the system can see the card.
also dmesg should show any boot up activity relevant to the card,
sometimes it's easier if you boot the machine up minus the card and then
plug it in - this makes sure all the hotplug services etc are up and
running when the card appears, which might not happen at boot time.
