Tar is a tarball Gz is Gzipped file So a Tar.Gz file is actually like a compressed zip file (litterally a gzipped tarball), if u unpack it with an archive manager there woudl probably be a bunch of files in there with a readme.
But yep you are better off with the deb package then you dont have to faff about with makefiles etc.. Hope this info helped anyway.
