I'm not sure about this (and I suspect it depends which cron daemon you
are using), but it doesn't _really_ matter, because you shouldn't be
editing it by hand anyways.

The easiest way is probably to drop the scripts
in /etc/cron.{daily,weekly,monthly} as appropriate.
