Basically speaking the Ubuntu installation is done to a file on the hard
drive which is basically some kind of image file that is read write and
mimics a logical partition, it, and therefore any files saved within the
linux filesystem within it are not accessible by Windows (or vice versa -
any files on the windows drive anywere outside of the ubuntu "image file"
cannot be seen in Ubuntu).

The installation itself modifies the boot.ini file to create a OS chooser,
at which point if you choose windows it carries on into windows as normal,
if you choose ubuntu it boots into this myserious image file kind of like a
virtual machine that acts as if it was hard-installed.

unfortunately you cannot boot into ubuntu form windows, ytou have to reboot
and choose the ubuntu installation just as if you really did have two
partitions and dual booted windows and linux.
