Interesting that BT seem to suggest a 256k ADSL service may still be possible. 
Perhaps this is based on there being a copper pair available. So even if you 
can get ADSL it will be almost useless due to the line length.

Well the proposed (and by no means agreed) Universal Service Obligation is not 
going to happen before 2012. BT are thinking about a limited FTTC rollout (a 
few city centre exchanges) some time in 2010. 

So when you look at it that way, the USO is going to be a pretty much empty 
promise, as by the time it comes into force there will (with any luck) be the 
technology to offer far better than 2mbps, and in fact 2mbps will probably 
woefully inadequate by that time anyway!

I find it amusing how not a week goes buy without the government finding 
billions for one thing or another, but investment in a future fibre network 
which will bring in billions of tax pounds through future business is not 
something they are willing to spend a penny on.
