I figured Xubuntu might be the way forward. But I would to crack the kernel
recompilation thing just as you say - as a learning exercise.

*Debian's policy is the "problem" - it's a laudable policy and I'm really
not going to criticise it, and I admire anyone with the principles to
stick with it. But if you're looking to pull the soundfusion code into
your install you've already decided to be more pragmatic in which case
using a more pragmatic distro would be easier.*

I can understand this policy, and I agree with you it is laudable and I
would not want to criticise it at all, but I can't live without sound -
that's what I meant was annoying, not the policy - hope that cleared things
up.

Thanks for the tips I will certainly look at the links etc and have a go at
getting a new kernel, but as you say I think Xubuntu is on its way back
long-term..
