I have the version of ubuntu before 9.04 running the default gnome desktop and
on that desktop there are only 3 menu "Applications places system" the one you
want is system under that menu there is two sub menus the one you want is
preferences in witch you will find "Network Configuation"
Don't "edit" the memu item RUN it and check the setting it will present you
with.
There may be also a icon on the menu bar that you could click on and try

I see the problem
the line in /etc/hosts
"127.0.1.1 richard-laptop.www.plusnet.com"
is the problem. The domain name "richard-laptop.www.plusnet.com" is strange
as normaily "www" would not be in the midel of the name. Also there is no
short name "richard-laptop" so asoming that the laptop is not being used as a
webserver try changing the line to:
"127.0.1.1 richard-laptop.plusnet.com richard-laptop"
but unbuntu automatily updates this file when you login and the network app
makes a new network connection so what I would serjest is on the desktop look
in the menus for "network" open that program and check that all the settings
are right esp the domain name settings.
I hope this points you in the right direction.
