Maemo is dead. Nokia and Intel merged their two product Maemo and Moblin to Create Meego. I wouldn't bet on and Maemo products for now until Nokia announce firm news regarding their futures. There have been unconfirmed reports that Meego will be ported to the N900.
Having given you that warning, Maemo is indeed a full arm (I think the CPU is Arm) port of debian and from what I've heard about it it is fantastic and the N900 is a very capable little device.
