    The / is added by almost every web-browser, if you have /$1,
    redirected visitors will see http://example.co.uk// :-)

That's me being a scardycat, I've yet to see it cause an issue, ever ;)

But the main bit was that we were detecting any host that wasn't
www.example.com <http://www.example.com> and redirecting to
www.example.co.uk <http://www.example.co.uk> which I assume would create
an infinite loop.


Yeah, that would. Modern browsers would detect that and throw a warning
