FreeNAS is one approach to home server - not quite Linux but free and Open Source. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2243748/turn-old-pc-hardware-into-a-killer-home-server-with-freenas.html

Someone has just donated me an old desktop pc with XP. I would like to convert it into a server to use at home. The main scope would be to have a machine always on that I can use to store backups and various data. Note that I should be able to connect to it from my *ubuntu laptop and my partner Win laptop. It does not need to be accessible from anywhere else apart from within our home network. Two additional features would be: 1. our smart TV should be able to browse it if we want to view pictures/films 2. our printer should be connected to it so that we could print from our laptops without having to attach them to the printer It's nothing urgent, so if there will be a December meeting I can bring it and configure it there and then or if someone wants to explain me how it should work and which options are available out there I will take notes! Thanks, Michele
