Mark,

Yes, I use OpenSUSE for my home data server setup. I learnt just enough
to set it up, keep it up to date and re-install the whole o/s at major
revisions.

I use btrfs to store my data (RAID 1 only of course!).

I use samba and minidlna to serve the data out to my internal network.

I use an APC UPS.

The setup has been running reliably for many years. The server has
successfully survived one hard disk failure out of 4 enterprise level
hard disks in use. btrfs happily accepted and made good use of a larger
replacement disk.

I have written my own backup routine. Backing up btrfs using snapshots
is a dream - usually virtually instantaneous. And yes I have checked
the data can be retrieved ok.

I chose not to get into the complexities of OpenSUSE automated updates
after experiencing a few problems when it was first introduced. Might
be worth another look now.

I have only learnt as much of it as I need to and I am don't claim to
be a Linux expert but I am pleased with the distribution. It did catch
me out when the kernel removed support for f2fs, which I was
experimenting with at the time.

fyi On the desktop I use Mint.

Did you have any specific questions?

Best regards,

Clive
