I can recommend Syncthing for file sharing. No central repository, it just
(securely) shares files between all the devices linked to a given share.
It's FOSS and well supported.

HOWEVER: Like Dropbox it's transparent once set up. Unlike Dropbox there's
no file size limit (since you're not using anyone's server). Which means
that if someone decided to drop a 5GB ISO into the shared folder then it
would be downloaded by everyone (of-course the same is true of Dropbox up
to whatever account capacity limit is set). There are ways around this but
with caveats - I'd suggest anyone interested looks at the project on github.

There are of-course self-hosted options like nextcloud, but they would
require someone to pay for hosting.
