They were introduced occasionally in order to allow for a better dispatch about when to align at '=' and when not. Example: ierr = some_operation(); super_long_variable_name_that_screws_everything_up = x; Clearly you don't want to align at '=' in this case. I wasn't aware about your reluctance with respect to blank lines (yes, they occur in other parts of PETSc regularly), so feel free to revert this if you think that you are making our lives less harder than you make yours easier.
