chrome also defaults to the 'default mailer' for your desktop. i.e on most linuxes - 'evolution' is set as the default mailer for gnome [perhaps kmail for kde etc.]. Unless you change this setting to something else - chrome will attempt to spwan evolution/kmail. Since 'mailto' requires extra config for setting users prefered mail client - I assert most users don't have this configured.
