If you are feeling like experimenting, you could try -ts_type gl which
is a very new adaptive order adaptive step method for stiff systems.  It
seems to be okay on your problem, but the controller is currently pretty
fragile (it's possible for step size to go to zero due to poor error
estimates, or for length/order to oscillate spuriously with several step
period).
