As a state-owned financial giant, Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) is playing a quite active and crucial role in the development of CSP projects in South Africa. To share with us about their experience and expertise in CSP, Mr. Gerrit Kruyswijk, Industry Champion: Green Industries SBU from IDC will be participating and giving a keynote speech during CSP Focus South Africa 2014 November6-7 Cape Town.
IDC has been involved in the co-development of all the CSP projects in Rounds 1, 2 and 3 bidding rounds of the government’s RE-IPPP program. Its Green Industries strategic business unit financed 22 renewable energy projects at a cost of R13.5-billion in the last three rounds. Of this, R2.7-billion went towards funding community projects. "In all these projects we have financed some element of community participation, ranging from 10% up to 25% to 26% in some projects,” said by Gerrit.
Round 1—Kaxu Solar One (100 MW parabolic trough) & Khi Solar One (50 MW steam receiver power tower): both are jointly owned and developed by Abengoa Solar (51%) and IDC (49%) in Northern Cape Province as South Africa’s first two CSP plants.
Round 2—Bokpoort (50 MW parabolic trough): 40%-owned by the Saudi Arabia-based ACWA Power, and IDC has taken a 25% direct stake as part of its mandate to support development of a green economy. The IDC will also fund on favorable terms the acquisition by a local community trust of a 5% share in the project.
Round 3—Xina Solar One (100 MW parabolic trough) & Ilanga CSP 1/Karoshoek Solar One (100 MW parabolic trough): The KaXu Community Trust holds 20% of Xina Solar One and Abengoa 51%. The IDC owns 29% as part of its mandate to support development of the green economy; The Shareholders of Ilanga CSP 1 include Emvelo (Lead Developer/ Project Manager/ BEE partner); IDC; ACS Cobra Energia (EPC and O&M Contractor); Public Investment Corporation (PIC), Investec and The Karoshoek Community Trust.
