Barry, you were right. That was the gcc version issue. This has been resolved with later version of gcc.

I notice something very concerning in your Conda environment. It seems to have a gcc (GCC) 4.8.5 which is more ancient than my son who is in college. I cannot imagine you would want to use such an old compiler. Perhaps if you upgrade the Conda environment to use a recent gcc then the other problem will go away. Please give that a try and let us know how it goes, send configure.log again if configure still fails.
