Forgive me if this isn't directly pf related, but I think you folks would have some experience with this issue. What is the minimum CPU required to saturate a 100mbps ethernet? My firewall is a 166mhz pentium that maxes out at 30-40mbps on the internal interface (using either fxp or xl cards), and doing a systat -vmstat while testing with ttcp shows that the CPU spikes up to 80-90% in use. First I thought it was a faulty card, but now I think that the 166mhz pentium doesn't have enough power to saturate the link. I have an old starmax 200mhz 604e which is able to reach close to 100mbps in the ttcp test, and my other, faster internal machines have no problem saturating the ethernet (switched network).
Is 166mhz just too slow?
