This question boggles my mind. The theoretical maximum is whatever standards your hardware is specified to handle, but of course that's not possible. The answer would rely on a seemingly infinite number of parameters (cpu, memory [state/frag limits], driver quality [irq handling], packet size, switch capacity/performance, physical cabling, etc).
