Alphabet Inc Executive Clears The Air About Android Chrome Speculations

Earlier today, Business Finance News reported that Alphabet Inc
(NASDAQ:GOOGL) was rumored to be contemplating merging its
Chrome OS with Android in 2017. However, It seems that the
rumors lacked authenticity since the search giant has officially
announced it has no such plans Senior Vice President of Chrome
OS, Chromecast and Android, Hiroshi Lockheimer took to Twitter,
this morning, to clear the air, stating that the organization is
"very committed to Chrome OS." He further added that the
platform still has a "ton of momentum."

Executive Summary: Google appears to be saying that Chrome OS (CrOS) is
not being absorbed into Android in the manner the WSJ claimed.
As I noted originally with my "believe it or don't" posting on the WSJ
claims, there were a number of questionable aspects to the original
assertion. CrOS has been extremely successful among schools and other
institutional users -- the kinds of groups who depend on CrOS' smooth
automatic updating and secure environment -- and on a stable user
experience (keeping in mind that *minimum* end-of-life for various CrOS
devices as documented by Google currently reach out to 2020).
Android is -- well -- different in these respects. One logical
possibility is that (since both CrOS and Android are Linux-based)
perhaps Google is working to unify the "under the hood" aspects of the
two OSes -- booting, libraries, network stack, and so on -- for more
straightforward development and maintenance. And further cross-OS
capabilities seem logical as well -- there's already the ability to run
some Android apps on CrOS. There are (at least in theory) a number of
ways that a kind of "unification" could ultimately take place while
still maintaining the expected user experience of the individual OSes.
We shall see in the fullness of time.
