Google's approach to the EU "Right To Be Forgotten" is a dangerous failure
https://plus.google.com/+LaurenWeinstein/posts/NUCFgemPcDj In http://www.google.com/transparencyreport/removals/europeprivacy/ Google discusses how they're forced to handle the EU's bull in the form of the EU "Right To Be Forgotten" (RTBF). It's "1984" from A-Z. Hide the trials. Hide the stories that mention that the stories mentioning those trials were hidden. Utter and complete crap. These are all events that happened. They are on the record. Trying to hide them from indexes is emulating the worst behavior of tyrants' censorship through history. And just like with those monsters of the past, when you try to deal with them they're just going to demand more and more and more. Already, the EU is demanding that results be censored globally, not just for EU users. Other countries like Czar Putin's new USSR are establishing even more draconian censorship protocols, and combining them with data localization demands for even more direct information control and thought control. Since political rivals to Putin tend to end up dead, vanished, or imprisoned, it's up to the big firms like Google to take a stand. Google has so far taken it's usual logical, measured approach to RTBF. I would assert that the data shows this approach is not working. It is a dangerous failure. It is enabling the slippery slope to ever more censorship, where every country will demand the right to censor any search results globally. --Lauren-- Lauren Weinstein ([email protected]): http://www.vortex.com/lauren Founder: - Network Neutrality Squad: http://www.nnsquad.org - PRIVACY Forum: http://www.vortex.com/privacy-info Co-Founder: People For Internet Responsibility: http://www.pfir.org/pfir-info Member: ACM Committee on Computers and Public Policy Lauren's Blog: http://lauren.vortex.com Google+: http://google.com/+LaurenWeinstein Twitter: http://twitter.com/laurenweinstein Tel: +1 (818) 225-2800 / Skype: vortex.com I have consulted to Google, but I am not currently doing so.
