An amazing book found on Google Books
I want to tell you about an amazing book I found on Google Books,
which I browse as I used to wander around the UCLA libraries pulling
books at random between classes many years ago. It's called "The
Magician's Own Book, Or The Whole Art of Conjuring" (published in 1857!)
It's over 350 pages of small print, and filled with diagrams. It is NOT
a book about the supernatural, but rather a collection of parlor
tricks, math and logic puzzles, chemistry demonstrations, and endless
other fascinating explorations.
If I had seen the book when I was a kid I would have been referring to
it constantly. It's a joy. And keep in mind that it was published only
13 years after Morse gave his famous telegraph demonstration! Lots of
solid science in there, despite a few understandable anomalies.
For example, at one point it uses the age of the Earth as 6000 years
as part of a logic problem (Darwin's "Origin of Species" was not
published until 2 years later). Anyway, it's a fun book, and of course
full text. Enjoy. -

There are also later editions, in 1864 and 1870 at least.
