Here are the steps governments will use to turn the Internet into a
government-monitored hellscape
Vietnam is now going down this route, as did China, and soon the U.S.
with bipartisan plans to (ultimately) track everything you do on the
Net. EU, Russia, everyone will join in. In China, violations of Network
use policy can get you arrested. Politicians in both parties here are
salivating over similar powers down the line. -L
1) Require government ID age verification (tied to identity of course)
to use "social media" ("to protect the children" from the Internet,
but not guns).
2) Expand this regime to any site considered by anyone to contain
any content "inappropriate for children"
3) Expand this regime to more sites, and ultimately to all Internet
usage, probably via ISP mandates
4) Any promises that these ID/age systems will not be used for other
purposes (e.g. tracking of usage) will quickly erode as calls rise
for detailed activity tracking for "more protection of children" and
"expanding law enforcement needs".
And that, my friends, will be that. -L
