Redux: Two essays on Google and User Trust

In light of my discussion yesterday of a "Users' Bill of Account
Rights", a couple of my essays from five and six years ago perhaps are
worth noting again, since the situations described in those have in some respects gotten even worse in the time elapsed since then.

But first, to be a bit more specific about which "Big Tech" firms I'm
including in my current discussion of this bill of rights, my initial
focus is on Internet service firms where individuals, companies, or
other organizations have accounts that they routinely use and where
they store data, to which they can lose access resulting in their
being unable to retrieve their own data. Obviously, Google is a major
player in this category.

The first essay, originally posted 17 November 2016, is:
Unacceptable: How Google Undermines User Trust by Blocking Users from
Their Own Data

https://lauren.vortex.com/2016/11/17/unacceptable-how-google-undermines-user-trust-by-blocking-users-from-their-own-data

This specifically addresses the problem of how users lose access to
THEIR own data if for any reason they lose access to their Google
accounts. The disruptions to lives that can result from this are
obviously immense.

The second essay, originally posted 12 June 2017, is:

https://lauren.vortex.com/2017/06/12/brief-thoughts-on-a-google-ombudsman-and-user-trust

or:

https://vortex.com/google-ombudsman-2017-06-12.pdf

This discusses Google user trust issues more broadly and returns to the
Ombudsman (now more commonly "Ombudsperson") theme I've hammered on with Google since the Pleistocene (at least it feels that way).

While these essays pertain specifically to Google, the problems and
proposed solutions apply broadly in various ways to this entire class
of firms.

Have a good weekend. -L
