The AI hype meter
My hype detection meter keeps pinning against the right peg in the red
zone every time I see these "AI will destroy us all!" letters,
pronouncements, and souvenir snow globes.
This is a hype-show on par with the early days of the dot-com boom
craziness and cryptocurrencies. It's not only mostly for commercial
advantage as firms try to keep other firms from gaining a "leg up"
(good luck stopping China!), but if the technology is so incredibly
radioactive then they could stop doing it right now and "save the
world." But it's not, and they're not. And the politicians and
journalists and public at large are being treated like suckers. -L
