YouTube Video for this weekend: "The Trip" with Peter Fonda and more
Greetings. Released during the "Summer of Love" (1967), Roger Corman
produced and directed "The Trip", which is arguably the most
quintessential example of a period psychedelic film and a "B" movie
favorite of mine.
Unlike the "drug scare" films that predominated, Corman wanted Trip to
actually be a pro-LSD film, since his own experience with the drug (in
preparation for the film) he proclaimed to be a completely positive
experience. He settled for what he considered to be a more neutral
view, though even that wasn't enough for the studio, American
International Pictures, who we'll get to in a moment.
Shot mostly here in L.A., it was written by Jack Nicholson and stars
Peter Fonda, Susan Strasberg, Dennis Hopper, Bruce Dern, and Salli
Sachse. Not bad, eh?
Basically, the film is the story of Fonda's character (a disillusioned
TV commercial director -- well, this is L.A.) who tries LSD for the
first time, with the film attempting to share his experience with the
audience.
While the film was a big hit with its target youth demographic, as you
can imagine it was panned in various other quarters. The studio was so
concerned before its release that it slapped on a scary disclaimer at
the start of the film, and a freeze-frame "shattered glass" effect
over Fonda at the very end.
I consider this film to be a "must see", and it's currently free on
YouTube Movies & TV (at least in the U.S.). This appears to likely be
the 2015 "director's cut", since the annoying disclaimer and shattered
glass ending imposed by the studio have been removed, and some
additional footage appears to be present. Very groovy. -L
