Regulate AI -- Right Now
I am routinely finding Generative AI responses to be untrustworthy
pablum. This includes ChatGPT, Google's public and beta projects, and
others.
The responses to factual questions are usually stated with great
authority -- but too often the answers are just wrong, imaginary,
misleading -- and all the more dangerous for *seeming* to have
authority.
Worse, often the answers are *partially* correct, and the average user
is not going to have the knowledge to recognize this -- a classic
example of how to spread misinformation.
On questions that are more opinion than fact, the answers always come
couched with language like "different people feel differently about
this" and "there are many answers to this question". You can almost
see the text strings buried in the code. Meaningless answers designed
not to offend anyone about anything.
And if you have a website, keep in mind that these systems are
slurping up your data and generating text replies from your data
mostly without giving you anything in return. Even when URL references
are provided, only a tiny percentage of users will ever click on them.
In many case, there are no references back to your sites. The
information flow is basically one way -- from you to the corporations
running these AI systems. Over time, the user views that you used to
get from Google search results and other search engines will wither
down to nothing. You'll be eaten alive. And your site will gradually
die.
The situation is monstrous. The monster is not the Generative AI
Systems themselves -- no evil computers plotting to destroy humanity.
Forget the sci-fi stuff.
It's the executives deploying these Generative AI systems in an
essentially unregulated environment who are the problem, and who could
make every science-fiction computer that ever existed in a novel or
film quake in fear.
The risks of collateral damage from strict government regulations of
AI are very real, but regulation is still needed. The AI firms cannot
control themselves. AI regulation needs to be deep and broad, and it's
needed right now. -L
